For most first-time arrivals, the simplest unplanned transfer from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) to Thamel is the official prepaid taxi. Arrange a hotel pickup if you arrive late, have several bags, need assistance or want someone waiting with your name. An app-booked car suits travellers who already have data and are comfortable coordinating a pickup. The city bus is mainly an option for daylight arrivals with light luggage and time to spare.

Traffic varies, so do not plan a tight appointment or onward connection around an optimistic driving time.

The choices at a glance

Choice Best for Main tradeoff
Official prepaid taxi A straightforward transfer without advance booking Check the current airport rate board rather than relying on an old online fare
Hotel-arranged pickup Late flights, groups, bulky bags or assistance needs Must be booked and clearly coordinated in advance
App-booked car Travellers with mobile data who can manage pickup messages The meeting point and driver response require coordination
City bus Flexible daylight arrivals with little luggage No confirmed direct service to a Thamel hotel; check the route on arrival

Official prepaid taxi: the default choice

After leaving the international arrival gate, look to the right for the prepaid taxi service. The airport says passengers pay in advance and that rates are displayed on a board; it does not publish a current Thamel fare on that page, so use the board as the price reference on the day (Tribhuvan International Airport).

A practical sequence is:

  1. Show the counter your hotel’s full name, map pin and address—not just “Thamel.”
  2. Check the displayed fare and ask whether it covers the whole car and your luggage.
  3. Pay at the counter and keep the receipt or ticket.
  4. Confirm the assigned taxi before leaving the pickup area.

This removes the need to negotiate immediately after a flight. Nepal Tourism Board also says prepaid taxis are available and notes that taxi drivers, travel agents and hotel representatives wait outside the terminal (Nepal Tourism Board).

The airport does not state which payment methods the prepaid counter accepts. Carry some Nepalese rupees or ask before paying. Its facilities information lists ATMs at the airport and two money-exchange counters in the arrivals lounge (airport facilities).

Hotel pickup: best when coordination matters

Ask your Thamel hotel about an airport transfer before flying if you are arriving at night, travelling with children, carrying trekking equipment or need mobility assistance. Compare its all-in quote with the prepaid taxi rate rather than assuming either will be cheaper.

Get these details in writing:

  • the total charge and payment method;
  • whether waiting time is included if the flight is late;
  • the meeting point in the new international arrival area;
  • the driver’s name and phone number;
  • what the name board will say;
  • whether the vehicle has enough luggage space;
  • whether the car will reach the hotel entrance or stop at a nearby lane.

Save the hotel’s phone number and map pin offline. Airport rules direct general pickups to the new international arrival area rather than the front of the terminal (TIA transport guidance). If no one is visible, remain at the agreed meeting point and call the hotel rather than leaving with someone who merely claims to represent it.

App-booked car: useful if you already have data

InDrive says its cars can be booked on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. Its system lets the passenger offer a fare and drivers accept it or make a counteroffer; the company also lists cash as a payment option (inDrive Nepal).

Use a car rather than a motorcycle if you have flight luggage. Before getting in:

  • set the pickup pin at the public arrival or parking area where you are actually waiting;
  • set the destination pin to your specific Thamel hotel;
  • compare the registration plate, driver and vehicle with the app;
  • keep any fare agreement inside the app;
  • confirm the payment method;
  • use the app’s safety and support tools if needed.

The airport provides free Wi-Fi throughout the international terminal, including arrivals, under the network name Free_CAAN_Worldlink_Wifi (TIA airport facilities). A working phone number or mobile data connection will still make calls and pickup coordination easier. If the booking becomes confusing, the prepaid taxi counter is the simpler fallback.

City bus: possible, but not a direct Thamel plan

The airport says passengers can reach the city by taxi, private car or city bus. It also says the free shuttle between the international and domestic terminals connects with the city-bus stop (TIA FAQ). The page does not give a current route, fare or timetable to Thamel.

Consider the bus only if:

  • you arrive in daylight;
  • you have light, manageable luggage;
  • you can ask airport staff which bus serves central Kathmandu;
  • you are prepared to walk or take a taxi for the final leg;
  • your check-in is not time-sensitive.

Ask airport staff for the current boarding point and route. Do not build an arrival plan around an old route number or fare found in a forum. With a large backpack, suitcase or late arrival, a direct car is the more practical choice.

A low-stress arrival plan

Before takeoff, save your hotel’s full name, phone number, map pin and a screenshot of its entrance. Add the name in Nepali if the hotel supplies it. On arrival, compare the live options available: the prepaid-taxi board, your hotel’s confirmed quote or the app’s current offer.

If you have made no arrangement, use the prepaid counter. Keep the receipt until check-in and show the driver the exact map pin rather than asking simply for “Thamel.”
